Guests were welcomed by actor and animal activist Peter Egan and actress Rula Lenska, who each gave a passionate speech about the importance of animal welfare both at home and abroad, praising Mayhew for our innovative and ground-breaking work in Afghanistan, Georgia, Russia and India.
Our CEO Caroline Yates then spoke in detail about past successes and future plans for Mayhew International in Afghanistan, where Dr Mo leads a team of vets, vets-in-training and humane dog catchers based in the capital city Kabul. Dr Mo then took part in an audience Q&A, shedding more light on his work and how money raised will help.
It costs almost £50 per dog to administer the Trap, Vaccinate, Neuter, Return strategy, and we have a target of 6,400 dogs in year one. We would also like to employ a Community Awareness/Education Officer in Kabul, to help Dr Mo and his team liaise with local residents.
Ricky Gervais said afterwards, “Thank you to everyone at Burgh House for a lovely night of fundraising for Mayhew.”
Peter Egan added, “A terrific event for Mayhew at Burgh House tonight. Thank you all for your continuing support for our voiceless friends. They need us now more than ever.”
With the £5,500 raised from the event, we will be able to continue our innovative TVNR programme in Afghanistan and help even more dogs in need.
