Read on for Chris* and Roxy’s story, and how Mayhew’s Community Animal Support team were able to help them through a challenging time in their lives…
Roxy never lets him wake up alone.
Every morning, no matter how heavy the night has been, she greets him with a whole-body wag… tail, ears, heart all moving at once. For a man who has lost almost everything, that joy is impossible to ignore.
After losing his wife of 23 years, his world collapsed. Grief led to the loss of work, and then, eventually, to the loss of his home. But through it all, Roxy stayed by his side. A steady, loving presence in a life that had become frighteningly uncertain.
“She gives me a reason to face each new day,” he says. “Even when the weight of grief and despair feels overwhelming, her happiness pulls me back toward the possibility of a better moment.”
But loving a dog when you’re experiencing homelessness comes with constant fear. Fear of not being able to afford food. Fear of not being able to access a vet. Fear of not being able to protect the wellbeing of the one thing keeping you going.

That’s where Mayhew’s Community Animal Support team stepped in.
When Roxy needed to be neutered, the cost was impossible. Then came devastating news: she was pregnant. The bill would rise by more than £700, which was money he simply did not have.
“I was already drowning,” he says. “That felt like the final blow.”
Mayhew didn’t hesitate. We covered the procedure, preventing an unplanned litter and protecting Roxy’s health, but just as importantly, we lifted a crushing weight from her owner’s shoulders.
“That wasn’t just vet care. That was someone seeing my situation and saying, ‘You don’t have to face this alone.’”
The support didn’t stop there. During the hardest months, when even feeding himself was a struggle, we made sure Roxy never went hungry. Food, advice, practical help – all given with kindness and without judgment.
Knowing that help was there changed everything.
“When you’ve lost so much, having somewhere you can turn means the world,” he says. “They don’t just help Roxy. They help me keep going.”
Today, Roxy is healthy, loved and still wagging with the same unstoppable joy. And her owner, though still rebuilding, has something priceless: hope.
“Mayhew isn’t just an animal charity. They’ve been an anchor in my storm - proof of what compassion in action really looks like.”
