When Florence arrived at Mayhew in February 2024, she was 11 years old and in need of support. After her owner was no longer able to care for her, the team helped get her back on her paws with treatment for an eye infection and dental problems.
As a senior dog with a medical history, there were concerns Florence might wait a long time to find a new home. Thankfully, the right person was just around the corner.
This is Florence’s and Kate’s story: “It was a Saturday morning, and I got the email from Mayhew about the dogs which needed rescuing. In this email, was an 11-year-old French bulldog named Florence.
As I read the profile, I thought this dog could fit into my life. After going through the application process, I got to meet her at the Mayhew. I expected a slower dog to come in but instead, here came this zoomy little thing!
After some tummy scratches, and a walk, I knew I wanted to be her retirement home. And soon as I got her home, she jumped in her bed, and it was like she had always been here.
And now, I can’t imagine life without her! I think people often overlook older dogs, but people are always surprised when I say Florence is 13, as she still so full of life and energy when meeting people.

This sounds very cheesy, but she has opened my heart, I didn’t realise I could love something so much. She is there for the good times and great comfort for the tough times too.
Adopting her is truly one of the best things I have ever done, and I hope to give her the best retirement home, as she really deserves it.”
