We are looking for alternative homes to cats who wouldn’t thrive in a traditional pet home.
Mayhew sometimes receives cats that prefer to live independently, without the level of human interaction expected of cats rehomed as pets. So we are looking for landowners, stables, farms, garden centres, and other rural locations who could offer a safe home to cats who wouldn’t thrive in a traditional pet home.
These cats are happier in rural or semi-rural environments where they have a base but can choose to interact less with people and exhibit their natural behaviours, such as roaming and hunting. Rural homes and businesses provide a safe shelter for these cats and benefit from their ability to deter and control pests.
Can you offer access to shelter, food, water, and space to roam?
Upon adopting a working cat, you'd need to set up a safe and enclosed area for the cat to settle in e.g an outbuilding or shed, for a short period of time while they get used to their new home. They'd need a supply a food, water, and litter, as well as a cosy area to rest with blankets.
If you should have any questions or concerns post-adoption, our Cat Adoptions Officer will be contactable and able to assist you.
Our working cats are listed on our 'Meet our cats' page, with the Type of Home filter selection of 'I need an alternative home'.
If you're interested in adopting a working cat, please fill out the adoption application form on their page.
The adoption fee for a working cat is £80. The adoption fee for a pair is £160.
All of the cats in our care will have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and had a vet check before being rehomed. Please note, we are unable to provide delivery for the cat, so you would need to be able to collect the cat from our shelter in North West London.
