We’re delighted to announce that Mayhew has made the shortlist for this year’s Charity Awards, the longest-running and most prestigious awards scheme in the charity sector.
Mayhew has been shortlisted in the Animals & Environment category for our rabies vaccination programme in Afghanistan. Since 2017, the team has vaccinated more than 132,500 dogs against rabies in Kabul, persevering through periods of great upheaval, contending with global epidemics and changes in government. Their work has saved hundreds of thousands of canine as well as human lives, and made the city a healthier and safer place for the whole community.

The Charity Awards, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, is the sector’s most highly-regarded excellence recognition scheme.
Caroline Yates, Head of International Projects and Relations at Mayhew, said:
“I am so proud of Dr Mohammadzai and all the Afghan team that have worked so hard over the last 7-8 years and really achieved great things in the face of some serious challenges. They are truly ambassadors for a rabies free world and so deserve this recognition of their dedication and compassion.”
Matthew Nolan, Chief Executive of Civil Society Media which organises the Charity Awards, congratulated Mayhew on making the highly-coveted shortlist. He said:
“For a quarter of a century now, the Charity Awards has been showcasing and celebrating the terrific work of UK charities large and small. At a time when the sector is struggling with higher costs, shrinking donations and ever-increasing demand for its work, it is reassuring and inspiring to see the extent and quality of charitable activity that is still going on across the country. We offer our heartfelt congratulations to all the charities on this year’s shortlist; we know that times are tough and you should all be very proud of getting this far. We wish Mayhew the best of luck on the night.”
The 10 category winners, plus the recipients of the Overall Award for Excellence and the Daniel Phelan Award for Outstanding Achievement, will be announced at a ceremony held on Thursday 3 July.
