Mayhew’s annual Great Rescue Ramble raises money to help us rescue and rehome dogs and cats all across London; and dog lovers of all ages are encouraged to join us and share stories about their own pets whilst taking part in a gentle stroll around the Heath.
This year’s event was once again sponsored by our incredibly generous friends Edgard & Cooper, and we are absolutely delighted to have raised over £1,450 through sign ups, donation buckets and on the day activities.
After meeting at the Parliament Hill Bandstand in the morning, ramblers and their dogs enjoyed a fun 3km or 5km guided route across the Heath, dog-friendly activities and games including ‘Temptation Alley’, a tombola stall, a ‘Hall of Fame’ photo display of happily rehomed rescue dogs, refreshments for two and four legged friends, gift stalls, information stands and meet and greets with our Animal Welfare Officers and staff
Each participating dog was also presented with a Mayhew branded bandana at registration, and the rather cloudy Heath was soon brightened up with a riot of yellow collars and joyful tail wagging!
After spending some time catching up with friends old and new, our groups of ramblers and their dogs set off to complete their guided walks. Many of the dogs were ex-Mayhew animals themselves, and it was wonderful to see so many familiar faces come together to celebrate the “adopt don’t shop” movement.
When ramblers returned to the Bandstand they relished the chance to enjoy hot refreshments, cakes and pastries from The Little Red Coffee Van, who very generously donated 15% of their profits from the day back to Mayhew – whilst the dogs tried to resist the treats and toys in “Temptation Alley!”
After collecting their complimentary goody bag from Edgard & Cooper, visitors could then browse stalls selling cat and dog themed gifts and speak to staff members about our animal welfare and rescue work in the community, both here in London and abroad.
Luckily, the rain held off, and after four fun filled – if rather blustery! – hours, dogs and humans alike headed off for a well-earned rest.
