    National Black Cat Day 2015

This month The Mayhew Animal Home is sharing the love for monochrome moggies by supporting National Black Cat Day 2015, on October 27th – will you join us in showing the world that black cats are totally “pawsome”?

Did you know that at present just over 70% of cats in shelters looking for a home are black or black and white? We have found that up to 40% of our cats looking for homes are black, and that on average they are the longest stayers in our home, just because of the colour of their fur!

At The Mayhew we love all cats, no matter what colour or breed they are – but this month for National Black Cat Day we’re showing the world that black cats can make fantastic pets, in order to help them find homes quicker!

With National Black Cat Day we want to raise the profile of these beautiful felines by getting people to see beyond just the colour of their fur. It’s thought that the black cats’ lower popularity is due to old superstitions about bad luck, when in actual fact black cats are seen as a sign of luck in UK folklore and in other countries across the world. According to the RSPCA, black cats are now unfortunately facing another challenge caused by the “selfie” phenomenon, which is that owners don’t want black cats because they think they don’t photograph as well as colourful cats.

We want to show that actually black cats are just as special as any other cat and that they deserve loving homes too! Please help us on our monochrome mission to support black cats, and decrease the amount of time it takes them to find their forever homes.

You could provide the ultimate support to black cats by making one cat’s stay in our animal home shorter, by adopting your very own feline friend. We currently have a number of black cats looking for a new home, one being our gorgeous 7 year old feline Pipsqueak, who has sadly been waiting for her forever home for almost a year. We can’t see why she’s been with us this long, because she is a pretty girl, who is quirky and playful, and can be an affectionate, loyal and lovable little thing once she settles into her new home. Considering adopting Pipsqueak? Find out how you could give her a new home.
