The Mayhew Goes MaDD for the Day

The Mayhew Animal Home recently welcomed pupils from Radnor House Independent School for their annual Make a Difference Day (MaDD).

The entire school, accompanied by staff members, spend the whole day undertaking voluntary work at local charities and organisations, and is part of the school’s ongoing commitment to supporting the local community.

For the past three years Radnor House has spent valuable time volunteering with us. On the day it was all hands on deck when eight pupils, all ranging from ages 7 to 18-years-old, accompanied by Assistant Head (Curriculum), Henry Meller, quickly got to work helping to clean out The Mayhew’s cat cabins, clearing out the kennels, and hosing down our sensory garden.

Radnor House’s Assistant Head (Curriculum), Henry Meller, said: “This is our third time coming to The Mayhew for our Make a Difference Day. I get a huge amount of letters requesting to volunteer for the day at The Mayhew – I have to do it by ballot just to make it fair.”

“This is a great experience for all our pupils and will hopefully encourage more of them to volunteer for a charity or organisation. As well as interacting with different age groups, it is also a chance for them to learn about what it is involved in running an animal home and what goes on behind the scenes.”

One of Radnor House’s Year 7 pupils, William, added: “I’m really enjoying my time here helping to clean out the cat cabins and cuddling kittens.”

“I want to be a vet when I’m older, so volunteering here for the day is perfect for finding out more information and learning more about the cats and dogs that need new homes.”

The Mayhew’s Head of Animal Welfare, Gillian Notton, said: “It is great to team up with Radnor House for their Make a Difference Day and every year we look forward to welcoming them back. The pupils helped us so much on the day and they were very hard working and enthusiastic.”

“We strive to tackle the companion animal welfare crisis from every possible angle and we conduct various educational projects for both adults and children. Make a Difference Day is a great opportunity for young people to learn about animal welfare, the importance of responsible pet ownership and safety around animals.”

We are proud to be a part of MaDD and we hope that this special day helps pupils appreciate the charities and organisations around them and inspire them to start volunteering.
