Happy International Cat Day: Top reasons to adopt a cat

Today is International Cat Day, at Mayhew, we love any excuse to shout about the incredible dogs and cats we have in our care and the benefits of sharing your life with an animal.

Today is International Cat Day, and at Mayhew, we love any excuse to shout about the incredible dogs and cats we have in our care and the benefits of sharing your life with an animal.

We are seeing a surge in demand for our services at Mayhew with more and more cats coming into our care. While we give them all the care, support and vet treatment they need, nothing compares to finding them the forever home they deserve.

By adopting a Mayhew cat, you may inspire friends and family to do the same, meaning even more cats and kittens get the second chance they deserve.

Whether you are looking for a kitten or want to give a loving home to an older cat, we have cats of all colours, sizes, ages and temperaments wanting a second chance. There are 11 million cats in the UK and 86% are moggies (PDSA Paw Report 2023) but each cat has its own individual personality. If you want a cuddle bug, who loves nothing more than snuggling on your lap or a more independent cat who socialises on their own terms, you may be the one for one of the cats or kittens in our care.

Check out the cats that are currently looking for their furr-ever home on our adoption page. Not quite sure you have space in your home, if not your heart to adopt a cat? See the top reasons below why your life will be full of love, fun and company.

    Companionship

    • Like people, some cats like company more than others.
    • More than half of all cat owners say that they got their cat to reduce stress and anxiety and for companionship (PDSA Paws Report 2023).

    Reduce stress and anxiety

    • Stroking a cat or having them snuggle up on your lap is one of the best forms of stress relief. A study tested couples to see how they responded to stressful tasks from solving maths problems to keeping their hand in ice water. Cat owners who took part had a lower resting heart rate and blood pressure and did better in the tests than their counterparts without cats (1).

    Improve your health

    •  Cats’ purrs have been found to lower blood pressure, promote bone strength and heal muscle and ligament injuries (2).
    •  Studies show that people with cats report that they feel more happy, confident and even feel in a better mood.
    •  45% of people chose to get a cat to make them happy (PDSA Paws Report 2023)

We rehome not just in London but further afield

    • We want to match our cats to the right owners. Some might want space to roam, others might be happy living in a city home. If you meet our adoption criteria, we can arrange for an online interview and virtual home visit first, and then you can come to our animal home in London

Advice and support from the expert Mayhew team

    • Every cat that comes from Mayhew is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
    • We keep in touch with our adopters and if you need any advice or support you can call on our team or check out our advice guides: Pet Advice – Mayhew
