Cuba

Cuba is a colourful character who needs a special someone to help her on her way to happiness. After being abandoned and feeling a bit poorly it has taken Cuba some time to find her paws and really trust people again. She is now fighting fit and making great strides in her current foster home. She will now venture on a lap and likes to hang out but is not one for getting too hands on. Cuba instead prefers a little head scratch with her special fuss stick and then when she feels ok will enjoy some cheek rubs too. She loves her grub and will need a grown-up home with people who have some experience with cats as Cuba will give you a hiss or a whack if she is not sure. That's why she'd need a nice quiet, calm home where she can be given the time to get to know you. So, if you’re happy for some sugar and spice and all things nice, keep reading to see if Cuba could be your purr-fect match and you could give her the fur-ever home she deserves…

Other Notes

Cuba arrived at Mayhew at the start of July after she was abandoned in a cat carrier outside the reception door. She has been behaviourally assessed and given preventative treatment at Mayhew in the form of microchipping, neutering, vaccinations and flea and worming treatment. When she arrived Mayhew vets noticed she had some lumps around her mammary glands which have been removed. we sent this off to be tested and it all came back ok and removal of the lumps should be curative with a recent re-check showing no issues. These lumps are the likely cause of the Pyometra (pus filed uterus) she had when she was neutered. The ovaries and uterus have been removed as per standard neutering practice and our vets expect no further issues going forward. Lastly Cuba has had some intermittent vomiting. This has been treated with a gastrointestinal food diet to help and she has had no more incidents of vomiting. The hope would be that she can return to normal diets once settled in her new home and she has been putting on weight so our vets are not concerned about this vomiting being anything to worry about. Now all she needs is a quiet home to call her own.

Foster Carer Comments

Cuba is a quirky and lovable cat, who is sometimes unsure what she wants, for example, head bumping my hand for affection one moment and whacking it the next. She was initially overwhelmed by life but has gradually come out of her shell here. She doesn't pester for food but is happy to show me the way to the kitchen and then scamper ahead of me to the other room where I feed her. She’s fine on her own but will often choose to be in the same room as me, grooming herself or curling up on her favourite armchair. When she arrived, Cuba was reluctant to explore and would keep her distance, preferring to be stroked by the end of a stick or feather teaser. Now she will settle on my lap from time to time and allow some gentle hand strokes on the back of her head or sit there contentedly and purr which is always a special moment. Cuba is gradually learning to play but will sometimes run away as if frightened by the toy or will turn her back on me as if to pretend it and I are not there. She's so amusing. A game she likes is to chase after pieces of kibble, including kibble thrown into her cat carrier, which is a bonus for vet visits as, like many cats, she doesn't like being picked up. Having Cuba is like watching a precious plant blossom as her trust and confidence grows. With patience and understanding she will continue to show what a sweet girl she is and those little wins will make all the difference to Cuba becoming a happier cat.
