Please select one of the options below, depending on which best describes the cat you are looking for.
Please note that it is not unusual for a cat to behave differently once settled into their new environment and therefore, despite Mayhews best efforts to accurately assess their needs, may fit better into an alternative category than previously thought. If you feel that a cat, once settled, does not suit the environment, Mayhew will be on hand to find a solution.
Category One Cat – These cats are used to being in closer contact to humans than a typical feral cat and may well even want to explore and settle in your home, of which we would ask prospective owners to understand and kindly tolerate. However, they are unlikely to ever be comfortable with physical touch and are therefore not the same as your typical pet cat, but they still desire to co-exist alongside a household. Outside shelters will need to be provided for the cat, located close to your home. These types of cats are likely to have been born and raised close to humans, or even inside a home, but will not have had appropriate handling as young kittens and are therefore under-socialised.
Category Two Cat – These cats are more cautious of being around humans but may be curious and watch you from a safe distance. They will tolerate your presence outside but will not be interested in exploring inside your home or if they did, they would panic if the door was shut and they felt trapped. Some cats, but not all. may even, over time, build up enough trust in its caregiver to allow some physical contact whilst outside. The shelter for these cats will need to be fairly close to your house.
Category Three Cat – These cats are likely to go out of their cay to avoid humans and will not enjoy any sort of interaction. You may not even see the cat very often as they will be elusive. Therefore, you would need to check their shelter is being slept in and the food is being eaten. These cats will prefer for their shelter to be in a secluded area, far away from the house and in as quiet a location as possible so that they do not feel pressured or worried by potential human interference. These cats may prefer to move themselves further away if they feel uncomfortable.
I have no preference.
