It’s been an incredible year at The Mayhew and we’ve been able to help so many cats and dogs – something that is only possible because of your support. Read on to find out about our work overseas and some of the animals we’ve helped this year: two little kittens, Rimini & Venezia, and beautiful Nugget, who we rescued from a life of being overbred.
However, please do spare a thought for the homeless animals who will be spending Christmas at The Mayhew this year, desperately hoping to find their forever homes in the New Year. We love to make the festive season special for our animals and we hope you can help us treat them as they deserve by making a donation this Christmas.
We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Rimini and Venezia arrived at The Mayhew at just a few weeks old after being discovered tied inside black bin liners and dumped on a pile of rubbish. They were in an awful state when we first saw them: very distressed, terrified and covered in their own urine. Thankfully we got to them in time and within just a few weeks they had grown into confident, healthy and joyful little kittens, who won over everyone’s hearts in the cattery. They have now been happily rehomed and are enjoying doing all the things that kittens should!
Our Animal Welfare Officers rescued Nugget from a miserable life of being used as a breeding machine. She was living in poor conditions with no shelter, veterinary care or love from her owners. We discovered lumps on her mammary glands but luckily they hadn’t developed into cancer and we were able to remove them in time. She was a scared, timid dog and our kennels team spent a lot of time bringing her out of her shell, and she is now full of life and enjoying her new forever home.
It’s been a busy year for the Mayhew International team working on projects around the world. Dr Mo carried out the first ever Dog Population Survey in Kabul, ground-breaking information that will lay the foundation for future projects to help dogs, cats and communities in Afghanistan. Our vet team returned to Tbilisi, Georgia, helping out after the summer floods in the capital and providing vet training and emergency care as well as touching base with our Trap, Neuter, Return project there. We were also able to travel to Moscow this autumn to provide vet training in spay and neuter for Russian vets helping out with the organisations we support there.
