Amazing Grace: Dumped Staffie found starving and filthy

Amazing Grace arrives at The Mayhew 11/09/14

Staff at The Mayhew were horrified when an emaciated dog with protruding ribs and a swollen belly reminiscent of a famine victim was handed in.

Grace, a white Staffie, was found on a Brent doorstep in a shocking condition – starving to death, blind in one eye and desperately weak – by a member of the public who brought her into the rescue centre in Kensal Green last week.

It is clear that she had been left for a considerable time to soak in her own urine, as her legs are stained and marked. She also has a grade 4 heart murmur, suffers from anaemia and her coat is in a filthy state.

Her stomach was so distended that The Mayhew’s vet team immediately drained off two litres of fluid. She was not microchipped so it’s not known who owned her.

Caroline Yates, Chief Executive, said: “This is one of the worst animal cruelty cases I have ever seen. I have never seen such severe starvation and malnutrition in a dog in the UK before. We don’t know if she’ll make it as she is having more surgery. We are doing everything we can to help her. All she wants is a cuddle. It’s amazing she has any faith in human beings after what she’s been through.”

You can help Grace make an amazing recovery…
The Staffie, who is around five years old, is being cared for round the clock by The Mayhew’s staff, who are monitoring her closely. We are appealing for donations to help Grace make an amazing recovery. If you can help, please consider making a donation.

    Thank you.
